How the word limit works
📝 References only
Only the words inside your reference entries are counted. Your thesis chapters, tables and headings cost nothing.
✅ Whole references only
If your balance runs out in the middle of a reference, that reference is not checked and not charged.
👻 Pending references
Anything past your limit is shown greyed out in the report so you can see exactly what is waiting.
▶️ Continue where you left
Once words are added to your account, press Continue checking and the same document resumes from the exact reference it stopped at.
What we check
✅ Real or fake
Each reference is looked up in CrossRef and OpenAlex. Anything not found is flagged — the classic sign of a fabricated citation.
🚫 Retracted work
Retractions, withdrawals and expressions of concern are detected.
📅 Outdated sources
References older than the age threshold are highlighted, with a year chart.
📊 Journal overuse
If too many citations come from one journal, reviewers notice. So do we.
🔍 Metadata mismatch
Wrong year, wrong journal or an altered title versus the official record.
🔖 In-text marking
Each citation inside your manuscript is coloured by the health of its reference.
📁 Saved history
Every check stays in your account — reopen the report or re-download the file.
